Title

American Slaver Captured by H.M.S. "Antelope"

Subject

Brief first-hand account of the capture of a slave ship off the Nigerian coast, with accompanying image of the ship.

Description

Engraving of a slave ship, with a short account of its capture based on a letter from a 'young officer' of HMS Antelope. The slaver was carrying 200 slaves and was bound for Havana (Cuba), but the author seems to be more interested in the 23 crew, and particularly one of the Americans, apparently born in Ireland, who had deserted from the British Navy. He also speaks of the financial rewards associated with the capture of enemy ships.

Creator

Anonymous engraving of a sketch by an anonymous officer of HMS Antelope; text based on a letter by the same officer, dated 4 September 1857.
